Cornerstone's 2024 Volunteer Day

Posted by Natasha Fee on September 23, 2024

On September 12th, the Cornerstone team stepped away from our spreadsheets and numbers and spent the morning outside the office. This respite from the office was all in the name of service as we spent the morning working with the excellent Habitat for Humanity team at their ReStore location in Kennebunk, ME. We were tasked with assisting their full-time members in preparing to open the store for the day. We got our hands dirty and used some elbow grease to make sure the donated items were attractive and that the retail space was ready for the perusing buyers who lined up outside the door for the opening at noon. It was all worth the effort to help those in need have access to affordable and safe housing.

The York County Habitat for Humanity has built 36 homes since its founding in 1985. It also supports the county residents by repairing homes and making accessibility modifications through its Aging in Place program. These essential services are all made possible by direct donations, sales from the ReStore location, and volunteer labor. York County is one of ten chapters throughout Maine and operates one of the five ReStore locations in the state. Those locations and the list of sites and ReStore locations around the country can be found using the Habitat for Humanity location search tool.

Housing is a basic need. Limited access and affordability issues have continued to make a bad problem worse. The fight for increased access to housing for all is a noble cause that everyone should take seriously. Habitat for Humanity supports communities worldwide and has assisted millions in improving their living conditions. Whether you visit a store and protect a vintage piece of furniture from the landfill, give money, or roll up your sleeves and give your time and labor, we hope you consider supporting organizations like Habitat for Humanity that are working towards assisting with this effort.

Cornerstone commits time and money throughout the year to community organizations. These volunteer days allow us to dedicate some time to giving back to the local communities we live and work in. Please visit our Giving Back page to see what we have supported in the past.
